<lead><![CDATA[SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. - The first time Mark Crouthamel attempted to turn a block of ice into a recognizable sculpture, it went so badly he swore he would never try it again. That was more than 15 years ago. ]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA[On Friday, as he slid a small electric chain saw into a 300-pound block of ice that would soon become a sculpture of a lion tamer, spectators would never guess that he once struggled to create the highly detailed works of art on display all weekend at the Festival of Ice in downtown Clarks Summit. "I was never an artist, so it took me a long time to even be able to sketch the design onto the ice," Mr. Crouthamel said. "I had to keep working at it. There's a science and an art to it." Years after his first carving experience, the former executive chef decided to attempt it again. At first, he started with easy designs and then practiced relentlessly. About a decade ago, he opened Sculpted Ice Works in Wayne County, and travels the area carving blocks of ice into whimsical sculptures for festivals and competitions. On Friday afternoon, he and fellow ice carver Neil Trimper set up in front of Sylvan Learning Center in South Abington Twp. to carve a lion tamer to go with the local festival's circus theme. A small crowd gathered as Mr. Crouthamel carefully laid out his ice-carving tools - a chain saw, an ice pick, a black marker and several power tools outfitted with sanders and drill bits. They cut two blocks of ice into smaller blocks and froze them together with water. Chips of ice, soft as snow, sprayed their heavy-duty boots as the two men worked painstakingly. After, Mr. Trimper sketched the lines of the lion tamer onto the icy tower, he used the chain saw to cut out the pattern and the power tools to add detail. Finally, he finished the carving by smoothing the ice's curves and ridges with a small heat gun. "I think it's really cool," said 10-year-old Elizabeth Treat of Lake Winola as she watched the men work. Her 9-year-old sister, Natalie Treat, chimed in, "I don't think I could do that." Mr. Crouthamel and Mr. Trimper will continue creating sculptures throughout the Clarks Summit area today as part of the Festival of Ice.
